Student Costs

Accomodation: £197 p/week for student halls
for information on the financial support available to
international students
for information on our hardship fund
(at the bottom of the page)

The above amount is based on average prices of Duchy House or other student accomodation.

When moving into second year accomodation costs tend to go down somewhat as you will probably be living further out. However this tends to be offset with higher transport costs.

Most students in second year and above pay around £150 per week.

For more information please see our accomodation pack.

Utilities: £10 p/w per person in shared accomodation

If you are not living in student accommodation, you will likely be responsible for paying utility costs (gas, electricity, water and phone/broadband, if applicable), though properties are sometimes advertised inclusive of utilities.

If you are living in a shared house, you should ensure that every tenant’s name is on each utility bill so that liability for payment is shared.

Travel: £22.40 p/w or £86.10 per month for a Zone 1-2 Travelcard

As a student you are eligible to receive 30% off the cost of public transportation throughout London. Purchasing a Travelcard means that you can travel as often as you like within the zones for which you have purchased your Travelcard.

If you do not plan to travel afield often, it may be more cost-effective to pay as you go and top up when travel is necessary.

Food: £50-60 p/w
You will find that the supermarkets in Central London are fairly expensive and costs can be cut down by shopping at a larger supermarket further out of the centre.
Lidl, Aldi, Asda and Morrisons are usually cheaper than supermarkets such as Sainsbury's and Tesco.

Most of the restaurants in the centre tend to be pricey as well but you can find a few cheap chains here and there.

Some of the University of London Intercollegiate Halls are catered, and meals are included in the cost of your rent.
